CNAIR appoints designer for the second Giurgiu–Ruse bridge. Strategic EU-funded cross-border infrastructure project

The National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration (CNAIR), led by General Director Cristian Pistol, has announced the designation of the designer for the feasibility study of the second bridge over the Danube between Giurgiu (Romania) and Ruse (Bulgaria).

The contract has been awarded to Egis Romania following a competitive public procurement procedure. The project is financed through non-reimbursable European funds under the CEF2 – Connecting Europe Facility, Military Mobility component.

The new Giurgiu–Ruse II bridge is planned as a dual-use infrastructure, integrating both road and rail transport. It is considered a strategic project for improving regional connectivity, reducing border waiting times, and strengthening the North–South European transport corridor.

The feasibility study contract has a value of approximately EUR 10 million, with an implementation period of 23 months from the start order.

Cristian Pistol emphasized that the project is of major strategic importance for both Romania and Bulgaria, significantly improving freight and passenger flows at one of the most congested EU border crossings.
