Major Step Forward for the Bucharest–Giurgiu High-Speed Road: Feasibility Study Contract Signed
A significant milestone has been reached in the development of infrastructure in southern Romania. The National Company for Road Investments (CNIR) has awarded the contract for the Feasibility Study of the Bucharest–Giurgiu High-Speed Road, one of the most anticipated road projects of the next decade.
The contract, valued at 33 million lei (excluding VAT), was awarded to a consortium led by ACTIV PROIECTARE INFRASTRUCTURĂ S.R.L. in partnership with a Turkish engineering firm.
The feasibility study is expected to be completed within 16 months, with the possibility of additional technical support if needed.
Experts will be tasked with determining:
- The exact route of the road,
- The road type: motorway or expressway,
- Strategic connections, including the future Giurgiu–Ruse Bridge and other major road projects,
- Technical solutions, covering material usage, integration of modern GPS/video monitoring systems, and application of the BIM model.
The project is funded through the European Transport Program 2021–2027, supplemented by national budget funds.
The connection to the Giurgiu–Ruse Bridge is considered vital, as it will enhance trade and mobility between Romania and Bulgaria, strengthening the Pan-European Corridor IX.
The Bucharest–Giurgiu route is planned as the A5 motorway, with an estimated length of approximately 51 km. The new road will take over the heavy traffic currently carried by DN5, providing a faster link to Sofia.
At present, DN5 is a national road with two lanes in each direction, largely lacking emergency lanes and featuring at-grade intersections – making it insufficient for current traffic volumes.
