Romania Becomes the EU’s Leading Natural Gas Producer
Romania has surpassed the Netherlands to become the largest natural gas producer in the European Union, according to Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja. This marks a historic milestone for the country and a significant shift in Europe’s energy landscape.
Production Growth and Future Outlook
Sebastian Burduja announced that Romania secured the top spot in 2023, overtaking the Netherlands, which had long been the EU’s leading natural gas supplier. The minister highlighted that with the upcoming exploitation of Black Sea gas reserves, Romania will not only solidify its position but also become a major gas exporter.
“Last year, Romania became the number one natural gas producer in the European Union. We surpassed the Netherlands, and with Neptun Deep coming online, we will be the undisputed leader,” Burduja stated on Antena3.
The Importance of Neptun Deep
Currently, about 10% of Romania’s natural gas production comes from shallow-water fields in the Black Sea. The Neptun Deep project, operated by OMV Petrom and Romgaz, is expected to significantly boost offshore extraction. Burduja noted that the first well has already been drilled beyond 1,000 meters in depth, with nine more planned.
This development will not only ensure Romania’s energy independence but will also support energy-intensive industries such as the pharmaceutical sector, ceramics production, and fertilizer manufacturing, enhancing their competitiveness.
With this new strategic position, Romania is strengthening Europe’s energy security while unlocking new economic growth opportunities.
