Romania Officially Joins the U.S. Visa Waiver Program

Romania has officially become the 43rd country to join the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, as announced today, January 10, 2025, by Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas in Washington. This historic milestone marks the culmination of years of close cooperation between the two governments and strengthens bilateral relations.
Under the Visa Waiver Program, Romanian citizens traveling to the U.S. for tourism or business will no longer need to obtain a visa. Instead, they can apply for an electronic travel authorization online, simplifying the process and saving time and money. This development is expected to boost economic ties, encourage investments, and foster cultural exchanges between the two nations.
Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu praised the efforts of Romanian authorities and U.S. partners in achieving this milestone. Details about the implementation date of the new system will soon be published on the U.S. Embassy's website, making it easier for millions of Romanians to visit the United States.
This achievement follows Romania's recent accession to the Schengen Area, further solidifying the country's integration into the international community.
