Romania plans to abolish tolls on three major bridges, including Giurgiu-Ruse, from 1 October 2026
Romania has announced plans to abolish tolls on three major bridges from 1 October 2026: Giurgiu-Ruse, Fetești-Cernavodă and Giurgeni-Vadu Oii. The initiative forms part of a broader reform of the country's road charging system, aimed at simplifying transport and reducing costs for drivers and businesses.
For the Giurgiu-Ruse Friendship Bridge, the proposed measure applies to vehicles travelling from Romania to Bulgaria. Romania's Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has also invited the Bulgarian authorities to consider removing the toll in the opposite direction, making crossings free of charge both ways.
The removal of bridge tolls could bring considerable benefits to cross-border transport, particularly road freight companies, logistics operators and businesses engaged in trade between Romania and Bulgaria. In addition to reducing direct transport costs, eliminating toll collection could improve traffic flow and shorten waiting times at the bridge.
The other two bridges included in the initiative are Fetești-Cernavodă, located on the A2 motorway, and Giurgeni-Vadu Oii. Both provide important road connections between different regions of Romania and are extensively used for freight and passenger transport.
Bulgaria has not yet announced a corresponding decision for traffic travelling from Ruse to Giurgiu. Meanwhile, the implementation of the Romanian measure requires clarification of certain legal aspects relating to the existing bilateral agreements.
For the Romanian and Bulgarian business communities, toll-free crossings at the Friendship Bridge would represent an important step towards more efficient cross-border mobility, stronger economic connectivity and closer commercial relations between the two countries.
